Solar PV returns now better than last year!

solar-sky.jpg

People seem to have been put off solar PV by all the media hype about the reductions to the feed-in tariffs, but the irony is that, despite the fiasco, returns are now just as good (if not better!) than they were at this time last year.

Last year, in 2011, the feed-in tariff was 43.3p per unit. It was the year when everyone started talking about solar, and PV systems were hailed as a smart new alternative to investing in banks and building societies. Read more »

The Future of the solar PV FITs

epc.jpg

On 9 February the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) released its comprehensive review of feed-in tariffs (FITs).

The review told us two things – firstly, that from 1 April homes must have an energy performance certificate (EPC) at grade D or above to qualify for higher feed-in tariff rates. Secondly the FIT will be reduced further on 1 July, as part of the government’s plan to make the scheme sustainable for the long term.

Those two dates are really important if you’re thinking about installing a solar PV system. If you’d like to secure the current rate of 21p per unit – and benefit from returns of up to 10% – we’d urge you to find an installer and book your installation as soon as possible. Read more »

Final news on FIT court case

court-decision.png

The Supreme Court has rejected the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) appeal over cuts to the solar feed-in tariff.

On 23rd March 2012 a panel of Supreme Justices refused Government leave to appeal an earlier High Court ruling that the cuts were unlawful. This means that all systems installed between December 12, 2011 and March 3, 2012 will receive the higher feed-in tariff rates (43.3p/kWh) for 25 years. Read more »

FIT update from the Energy Saving Trust

The Energy Saving Trust have issued the following update to clarify the situation regarding feed-in tariffs for solar PV in the UK.

For householders having a Solar PV system of less than 4kWp installed:

Regardless of what some installers may say there is no guarantee that householders will get the higher (43.3p/kWh) rate for installations with an eligibility date between 12th December 2011 and 3rd March 2012.

Customers who install on the assumption of the higher rate do so at their own risk. Read more »

The rise and fall of UK solar PV subsidies - infographic

The history of solar subsidies in the UK is a confusing, up-and-down issue! The recent confusion, legal battle and subsequent finding, that the government acted illegally, have massively undermined confidence in both the government in general and the UK solar PV tariffs.

To help try and make sense of it all, and to paint the picture of what has happened since 2000 we have created the following infographic - The rise and fall of UK solar PV subsidies. Click on the image for the full size view
